The Dialectic Journal is a tool that, when used correctly, can be an amazing asset in the analyzing of a novel. Students are beginning their introduction into the dialectic journal through group collaboration. Each group member, must contribute to the journal with at least one quote from the chapter. They write down the quote, the pg number, the theme, and of course comment on the quote. If they do not know what to say, they explain their reasoning to their groups. This becomes what they should write down. Today we practiced this skill with chapter one. Tuesday, we will practice with chapters 2 and 3.
In class we discussed Annawadi. Students were amazed about Abdul's life in the slums, his mother, and his family. One student commented that she was amazed about the "everyone out for them selves way of life" in the novel. This is going to be a great novel for discussion!
