English half days have always been a challenge: there is so much to discuss, but so little time. Today, Students began looking at how characters help with our understanding of theme. Chapter 2: Asha - is an intriguing look into the politics of the undercity. We catch a glimpse of how she has the desire to be the first slum lord of Annawadi. Corruption is another theme that is heavily covered in this chapter. Chapter 3: Sunil - is looking at the life of a scavenger. Sunil is a small 12 year old boy who just wants to be taller than his younger sister. He scavenges to buy food for himself and his sister. We see how he does this and get a glimpse of his conflict to become a thief or stay a scavenger.
We also begun to experiment with theme journals. Each theme group writes a question or comment about what they are reading. The journal is passed to the same theme group in a different period where a new group answers questions, asks a question or comments about the book. The goal of the theme journals is to have an open "discussion" between students in different classes. Thus furthering our understanding of the novel.
