Views on the Rough Draft
Help, I'm scared of writing, I don't know how to start, I don't want to fail. These thoughts are valid and what every student thinks at some point in time. This is normal. You are being asked to do something that is new and therefore uncomfortable. The anxiety begins to build, the work is over analyzed, and nothing is put onto the paper.
That is what the rough draft (1.0) is for. If you begin writing, I can begin to read your work. Once I read your work, I'm able to analyze what you are doing and give you ways to focus and improve your writing. The purpose of a rough draft is to see ways to improve your writing. It is a document that is meant to be messy with unfocused ideas and off word counts and grammar mistakes. Once you struggle with how to start, what to write, and how to conclude, I'm able to read your work and suggest ways to improve on each part. If you do not write a rough draft, I have nothing to read and give you suggestions for improvement.
Since this is the most important part of the process, I ask that you write it on your own. If you ask me how to start or end a paper, I will ask you to think about what the best way to start and end a paper would be, I will not tell what to write. This is where you grow as an author, a student, and a person. This is where you begin to build your confidence.
My guarantee to you, if you turn in a rough draft, I will go over it, and have a conference with you to give you ways to improve, and get a higher grade. Most students are able to raise their grade from a D - C or a C - B or B - A.
Because the rough draft is so important, this is a must complete assignment. I will keep working with you on improving your writing, if you turn in this first step. With out, you risk losing the option of revising your papers.
