B day 10/29 - Started reading and annotating "Kodama's Ramen Shop". We will finish it on Thursday. The focus is on learning how to use an annotation guide to help better understand a text. Classes did not get to slide 4. (Do not worry about slide three - you answered questions on google classroom)
If you missed - Pick up the story from me and begin reading and annotating it. A Day 10/28 - Finished reading and annotating "A Stranger at the Bonchinche". Completed group questions that focused on the annotation guide. Classes did not get to slide 4. If you missed - be sure to complete the Stranger at the Bonchinche story and annotations. Last week, students were directed to turn in their setting/costume design page, an archetype chart, and a check in page (answers to questions). Sadly, many students didn't do this and we had to discuss the importance of listening in class to understand the expectations. We also discussed the short story, working on and turning in a draft by 11:59 pm Friday, October 11, 2019 to google classroom. * If a student is failing because they didn't turn in their work, they have until Wednesday (B day) and Thursday (A day) to hand in the work. We practiced our annotation skills and discussed Chris's short story from Daemon Hall, "Ride the Black Wind". If you missed and are unhappy with your grade, make sure to turn in the missing work when you returned. If you missed class - make sure that you pick up the story and annotate it according the the information posted in slide 3. |

Today was the start of a new genre discussion - Romance. Since most of us are not huge fans of romance, we focused on characters and the free write. Students need to complete the stage/costume design for Tags along with the archetype chart. If you missed - Complete page 15 and the free write on page 17. All Students - be sure to complete the stage / costume design and archetype chart for next class. They are do at the beginning of the class. |

Students continued to look at Tags by Walter dean Myers. They focused on the importance of language and setting to the play. The class broke up into groups of 5 to read the play. One member was the director and the rest were the cast. Together they read the play and went through the language. |

- Day 5 found us wrapping up the short story. - page 10 was completed and changed a bit. We wrote a claim and reflection about the story along with filling out the title, author, genre, and summary - we began to fill out page 8 with a simple theme of the story - some classes began moving onto page 11, looking at the genre of drama and the literary element of setting. - other classes moved onto the free write on page 13. If you Missed - we will catch you up in class. Since we changed things in the notebook, you will be shown what to do when you come back. |

Today we finished the short story and completed recording important words, phrases, and sentences that convey the big idea of duty. - Language as a literary element. - Language is about communicating ideas. Without language, we can not communicate. Authors use, diction, syntax, connotation, denotation, jargon, and slang to not only convey the big ideas, but to develop complexity within setting, characters, plot, and conflict. We continued to look at the interactive notebook/journal. Our warm up consisted the opening genre page for historical fiction and the literary element of language and a discussion on the topics. Free Write - Students are able to test their skill at writing a 5 minute free write about a photo and share out their stories. The class ended with a read out loud from Daemon Hall. |

Students were introduced to Unit 1 - The Short Story. We discussed the embedded assessment (writing a short story), different genres, and what it means to come of age (The theme of the year) Students worked in groups to learn about coming of age celebrations from around the world.
