UNIT 2 - Film Analysis 
Developing and 
supporting a claim with a Focus on theme

Guiding Questions:
  1. What is a claim and how do I write one? 
  2. What is evidence and how do I use the best evidence to support my claim? 
  3. What is a reflective commentary and how do I write an effective reflective commentary
  4. How do I put it all together and write a strong analytical paragraph? 
Detail of Paragraph Scoring Guide: 
PARAGRAPHS ARE NOT ACCEPTED LATE, OR ALLOWED TO BE MADE UP. IF YOU DO NOT TURN IN YOUR PARAGRAPH ON TIME, YOU WILL GET A 0 AND YOU CAN NOT MAKE UP THE WORK. 
Paragraphs will be scored using two grades, a point grade and a letter grade. 
- The Point Breakdown - 5 points total
     5 points for turning in the assignment and it is complete with a claim, data, and reflective commentary. Obvious effort was given. 
     4 points for turning in the assignment and it is complete a claim, data, and reflective commentary. Paragraph feels rushed with not much effort given. 
     3 points for turning in the assignment but it is missing one component (Claim, data, reflective commentary). 
     2 points for turning in the assignment but it is missing two components (Claim, data, reflective commentary). 
     1 point - something was turned in.
     0 - the assignment was missing or not turned in on time. 

A letter grade will be assigned to allow the student to determine how they are improving in their writing. The letter grade will not go into power school.



Unit 2 - At a Glance: 

  • We will watch and analyze cinematic techniques in various Pixar shorts and full length film with a focus on how the director uses the technique to develop the theme. 
  • You are required to write one detailed paragraph for each film answering the question, “How does a director use cinematic techniques to develop the theme in a Pixar Film”. Each paragraph will receive two grades, a point and a letter. 
  • You will choose three paragraphs to develop into process writing pieces. Each paragraph is worth 20 points, and you will have the time to develop each paragraph for the highest points possible.. 
  • Work will be assigned through google classroom and includes viewing notes, practice paragraphs, and published paragraphs.  

Film Notes & PARAGRAPHS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED LATE.

1) open up the Extra Credit Film Notes
2) Choose any Pixar Short we have not seen in class

Jan 21 & 22 - Day 13 Unit 2 Film

WHAT WE DID TODAY: 
Students watched Night & Day(2010) and took film notes. 
Students also watched Smash & Grab (2019) and took film notes.

January 16 & 17 - Day 12 - Unit 2 Film

WHAT WE DID TODAY:
Today we took our first look at writing a reflective commentary. This is the analysis of an analytical paragraph (paper). This is where you show your thinking and make connections to prove your claim. 
IF YOU MISSED: 
Be sure to go over the in class presentation and look at the steps and examples for writing a reflective commentary. 
- Jack-Jack Attack (​2005) paragraph due at the end of class. If you missed, they are do before next class.

WHAT WE DID IN CLASS: 
Today we discussed identifying textual evidence and incorporating it into an analytical paragraph.

1) Go over the presentation to gain information about textual evidence
2) Complete film Paragraph. - Due 1/8/2020 at the end of class. If you were absent, the paragraph is due 1/9/2020 by 11:59 pm.

january  6 & 7 - Day 8 - Unit 2 Film

 WHAT WE DID IN CLASS:
Today we began our new novel, "One of Us is Lying" by Karen McManus a wonderful mystery. We also looked at our Geri's Game Paragraph. We went over camera movements and watched For the Birds (1991) and began filling out the viewing notes for the film. 
IF YOU MISSED: 
Be sure to go through the presentation. Look at your paragraph and highlight it according to slide 4. This will allow you to understand what your number score is. If you got a letter grade that you are not happy with, please note we will go over textual evidence (data) and reflective commentary this week. 
- Be sure to complete Viewing Notes for For the Birds by 11:59 Tuesday, 1/7/2020. If you need help, come in to see me. I'm hosting a viewing morning with Hot Chocolate Wednesday 1/8/2020 6:45 - 7:00.

December 18 & 19 - Day 7 - Unit 2 - Film

WHAT WE DID IN CLASS: 
Today we focused on writing the analytical paragraph with attention to the claim. The claim is the topic sentence informing your reader what you are writing about. 
IF YOU MISSED: 
Be sure to go through the power point presentation and read about the claim If you need extra support, use the sentence frame (found in the presentation and on the paragraph assignment)

December 16 & 17 - Day 6 - Unit 2 - Film

WHAT WE DID IN CLASS:
Today we discussed the difference between compliance and competency and what it means to be compliant on assignments. We reviewed Geri's Game film notes discussing the importance of a deeper meaning theme. Solitude vs. Agism (How society treats the elderly) and why it is important to dig deeper in developing the theme. 
IF YOU MISSED:
- Complete Geri's Game film notes. They need to be done before next class. You do not need to turn them in, you will turn them in at the same time you wrote your paragraph.

December 12 & 13 - Day 5 - Unit 2 - Film

December 10 & 11 - Day 4 - Unit 2 - Film

Analytical Paragraph Document. This document is found on google classroom. 
WHAT WE DID IN CLASS:
We completed our Luxo Jr. Notes, looking at theme, cinematic techniques, and explaining how the cinematic technique supports the scene. 

Classes - 3B, 4B, 1A, 3A, and 4A completed their analytical paragraph. The purpose of this first paragraph is to determine student's analytical writing ability. 
IF YOU MISSED: 
Complete the viewing notes and paragraph. Submit it before the next class. If your work is late, you will be given a 0 and not allowed to make up the assignment.

December 6 & 9 - Day 3 - Unit 2 - Film

WHAT WE DID IN CLASS: 
Students began to look at cinematic techniques, and 
practiced taking viewing note for Luxo Jr. 
We also went over the website, looked at Unit 2 and checked out the Paper Expectations tab. 
IF YOU MISSED: 
- Go through the power point presentation.
1) Make sure that you have complete the definitions for -Shots and Framing, Lighting, & Sound. 
2) Open up the document on google classroom: Viewing Notes: Luxo Jr. 
3) Watch Luxo Jr. 
4) Fill out the first row with notes about what stands out to you in the film.

December 4 & 5 - Day 2 - Unit 2 - Film

WHAT WE DID IN CLASS: (A Day)
Students watched The Pixar Story (2008), directed by Leslie Iwerks. The Pixar Story is a documentary of the history of Pixar Animation Studios. The documentary continues out kick off into the film unit. Students are asked to take notes about the important events that led up to Pixar's success and why their films are so unique. 
(B Day) - Finished class poster.
IF YOU MISSED:
And you have Netflix, watch the documentary and take notes on the events that led up to Pixar's success and why their films are so unique. If you do not have Netflix, see me when you come back.

December 2 & 3 - Day 1 Unit 2 - Film

WHAT WE DID IN CLASS:
​Students were introduced to cinematic techniques and worked on a poster project.
